The Fighter – A magazine article written by a student of mine

As well as training and fighting in Thailand, I also teach English here. This is something I do not only because it funds my stay in Thailand, but because I truly enjoy it. Teaching fulfills me in a way that I never expected it to. Before I became a teacher, I’d never known what it was like to do a job that I loved. Now that I do, I can’t imagine doing anything else. Being Conned by a Slippery Promoter

During this year’s Songkran festival, I travelled to Buriram to fight along with a few other fighters from my gym. Buriram is the home province of our trainer, Ajarn Saming, and he’d organised it all for us. We fought around mid-afternoon, during which the promoter was present. Strangely, he very quickly disappeared as soon as we’d finished. We also noticed that all of the Thais who’d fought that day had already been paid straight after Read more

vs. Mangpor Suksanongchai, Buriram Songkran Festival, 14th April 2013.

After having 4 fights in one month, I was eager to take a break and remember what it was like to relax without the pressure of constant training, dieting and fighting. With the Songkran festival coming up, this seemed like the perfect time to do so. But then my trainer, Ajarn Saming, asked me to fight over Songkran weekend in his hometown in Buriram. I really didn’t want to fight, but I knew that the Read more

vs. Jack Por. La Sear, Ayutthaya AITMA Naikanomtom Championship Tournament Final, 20th March 2013.

This fight was two days after my previous one against Sarah Brown from Australia, for the final of the AITMA Naikanomtom Championship Tournament in Ayutthaya. After winning that initial bout, I was told that I would face a Thai in the final. There were no Thai girls present at the weigh-in on the first day of the tournament. In fact, Sarah was the only girl there who was in my weight class, so to my Read more

vs. Sarah Brown, AITMA Naikanomtom Tournament, Ayutthaya, 18th March 2013.

This fight was the first of two that I had in the AITMA Championship tournament, which took place over Naikanomthom festival in Ayutthaya. As I’d had less than 10 fights, I was set to fight in the B-class category, which meant wearing shin guards and elbow pads. Since I’ve only ever fought in Thailand, this was a first for me. I wasn’t keen on the idea of wearing protective gear, but was happy for the Read more

vs. Nong Teaw Aj. Samran, Ratchabhat University, 1st March 2013.

This fight was the first ASEAN Muay Thai Festival, which took place at the Muay Thai College at Muban Chombeug Ratchabhat University in Ratchaburi. Although I’d fought only ten days prior to this one, this was something I really wanted to be a part of. Apart from a little of the usual shin bruising, I had no injuries, so thought I might as well make the most of the opportunity. Also, some friends of mine Read more

vs. Yinglek Sor. Petchmaitree, Rangsit Stadium, 22nd February 2013.

My sixth fight was to take place at Rangsit Stadium, where I’d had my last three fights. Since the last one, they’d asked me to fight there every 15-20 days, which was great for me. As women are not permitted to fight in Lumpini or Rajadamnoern, Rangsit Stadium is probably the best place for female fights in Bangkok. What I really appreciate about this stadium is that they actively promote female fighters, and genuinely take Read more

Fifth Fight, First KO! – vs. Petchanamnuer Paroadratchadamneur, Rangsit Stadium, 8th January 2013

My fifth fight felt like a bit of a milestone for me, as I originally only planned to have one or two. Although five is still a very small number, it’s not one I had ever planned to reach, so it felt like an achievement before I even stepped in the ring. It was also my first fight of 2013, a year that I’d planned to spend getting as much fighting experience as possible so Read more

vs. Nong New Sitkrupaew, Rangsit Stadium, 16th October 2012.

This was my fourth fight, and I was scheduled to face Petchkularb, my original opponent from my third fight who’d pulled out the day before the event citing period pains. However, the day before this fight, she once again dropped out, this time with no explanation at all. I didn’t spare it much thought, last-minute changes happen all the time. Besides, no matter who I went up against, I was still going to fight the Read more

vs. Nong Nee Sitkruchuk, The Queen’s Birthday, August 12th 2012, Rangsit Stadium

My third fight was to be my first stadium fight, on an all-female card for a televised event on the Queen’s Birthday. I was originally set to rematch Nong Nee, who had beaten me on points in my previous fight. However, she’d pulled out for unknown reasons a few weeks before. This was disappointing, as I’d been looking forward to fight her again, but she was quickly replaced by another girl named Petchkularb. For two Read more
